One of the chores that I absolutely cannot stand doing is emptying the dishwasher. I dislike it so much so, that I put it off…and put it off…until I absolutely must do it. Or sometimes I get lucky and Michael does it!
So that got me thinking today…do I do that with anything else in my life? I mean, my MO has always been to do the “hard thing” no matter what. Just get it over with. I don’t ever care if I necessarily like doing something or not. Quitting is not an option. Procrastination is not a word in my internal dictionary.
I decided to take my same approach in life to my most unwelcomed chore. I opened the door, took a deep breath, and timed myself as a test of sorts. Guess how long it took me to empty it? THREE minutes. That is it. I smiled as I looked at the empty dishwasher and then my disdain quickly disappeared. Three freakin’ minutes!! I put more energy into NOT doing it before then it took me to actually do it.
Let that be a lesson for today. When you are facing something that you don’t particularly want to do because of the lies that you told yourself…remember that it is probably all in your head. So, just go for it. Get it over with. You will probably find that your loathing is unwarranted. Change the words in your head and see what you can accomplish.
I am still not taking out the trash though. THAT is where I draw the line.
